Mexico's strongest quake in century strikes off southern coast

An earthquake described by Mexico's president as the country's strongest in a century has struck off the southern coast, killing at least 27 people.

The quake, which President Enrique Peña Nieto said measured 8.2, struck in the Pacific, about 87km (54 miles) south-west of Pijijiapan.

A tsunami warning was issued for Mexico, with three-metre-high waves possible, and other nearby countries.

In April 2015, a volcano in Ecuador awoke from its restless slumber. The mountain shook with hundreds of earthquakes, and a thin tendril of steam escaped from Cotopaxi’s core. Each day, locals could see smoke and ash spiraling above the peak as seismic activity ramped up.

A strong Mw. 6.0 earthquake at a shallow depth of 4 km occurred at 01.36 UTC (03.36 local time) in Italy, in the province of Rieti (Lazio), at the border with Umbria and Abruzzi regions. The earthquake caused extensive damage in the area around the epicentre with a number of fatalities reported and a number of people under rubble or still missing as of 11.00 UTC (13.00 CET). Severe damage has been reported in the villages of Amatrice, Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto and Pescara del Tronto.

As Haitians were reeling from the devastating Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake, United Nations peacekeepers inadvertently compounded their troubles by bringing cholera to the island. Roughly 10,000 Haitians have died from the disease, which spreads easily in places with poor sanitation.

The United Nations hasn’t acknowledged its responsibility and has vigorously fought legal efforts to secure compensation for victims.

Ecuador Earthquake - Information Resources

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred on the central coast of Ecuador on 16 April 2016 at 23:58:37 (UTC), 6:58pm ECT.
The epicenter was 16 miles SSE of the town of Muisne.

Another earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 struck Ecuador early Wednesday, 18 May 2016 at 2016-05-18 07:57:05 (UTC).  The epicenter was 36 miles south of Esmeraldas at a depth of about seven miles, the USGS said.

Also, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck Ecuador on Wednesday 2016-05-18 at 16:46:44 (UTC).  The epicenter was 24km NW of Rosa Zarate, at a depth of 31.0 km.

More than 260 people have died, mostly in Pakistan, after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake hit north-eastern Afghanistan.

Tremors from the quake were also felt in northern India and Tajikistan.

At least 12 of the victims were Afghan schoolgirls killed in a crush as they tried to get out of their building.

It’s been four months since Nepal’s deadliest earthquake hit. Yet, the country still has yet to dole out a cent of the $4.1 billion in donations it received, Reuters reported. . . .

. . . According to the news outlet, the government won’t start spending the relief funds until October. The delay is due to reluctance to start building work during monsoon season and the fact that plans still require approval.

As the shaking started, everyone in the room began to laugh. Earthquakes are common in Japan—that one was the third of the week—and the participants were, after all, at a seismology conference.
