Future Trends in Geospatial Information Management: The Five to Ten Year Vision

United Nations Initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management - April 24, 2012

A working group was established to assess the future trends in geospatial information management at the 1st meeting of the UN Committee on GGIM in Seoul, Korea. Chaired by Dr. Vanessa Lawrence, Director General and Chief Executive of Ordnance Survey, the working group has received written inputs from 29 persons or institutions. A summary of the future trends shall be presented during this forum in Amsterdam, followed by discussion among all the participants. Meanwhile, the process of soliciting views on future trends continue and the working group welcomes any additional inputs. A consolidated paper on the future trends shall be discussed in the 2nd Session of the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management.

Japan, Ukraine to Perfect Post Nuclear Accident Response

KYIV, Ukraine, April 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Japan and Ukraine will join their efforts in liquidation of the consequences of nuclear disasters. The respective Resolution on Deepening the Relations with Ukraine has been unanimously approved by the House of Representatives of the National Diet of Japan (the bicameral legislative body of the country).

The resolution of the Japanese parliament lists the lamentable experience that both Ukraine and Japan have had with nuclear plants accidents as the basis for the ensuing bilateral cooperation. The two countries resolved to sustain world peace and further their partnership in perfecting post-accident response to nuclear emergencies according to the recently signed agreement. Interestingly, Ukraine has four functioning nuclear plants, while Japan boasts 16.

(TDR) - The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases.

TDR’s new Director, John Reeder, is overseeing the development of a new strategy that will create a smaller and more focused organization. He has been working with staff, co-sponsors, governing bodies, funders and other key stakeholders to identify the unique values and skills that TDR can bring to the global health research field. He wants to provide more impact and value to the low and middle income countries burdened with infectious diseases of poverty like malaria and river blindness. One of the ways he is doing this is by engaging more closely with the World Health Organization’s regional offices. Recently he met with the Pan American Health Office’s Director Mirta Roses to discuss research strategies and collaboration – the first of visits to all regional offices.

(Reuters) - Oil prices fell on Wednesday as the U.S. and some European governments mulled the release of strategic oil reserves, while commodity-related shares weighed on global equities.

U.S. stocks closed weaker, though far from the day's lows, in the wake of economic data that was slightly below expectations.

France, the United States and Britain are in talks about the possible release of strategic oil stocks to help push fuel prices lower, French ministers said, only weeks ahead of the country's presidential election. Purchasing power is among voters' top concerns.

Predicting Locations of Emergency & Damage During Disaster Using VGI Data

The VGI data obtained from the Ushahidi-Haiti platform during the first 72 hours of Earthquake in Haiti can be used for predicting the locations of ‘Emergency and damaged areas’ using Ushahidi Reports in Port-au-Prince. Two rapid and very successful VGI deployments helped coordinate disaster response after a devastating magnitude 7 earthquake struck Haiti in January 2010.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) project volunteers working outside Haiti created a digital street map of Port-au-Prince and other places in Haiti very rapidly using fine-resolution imagery to trace vector maps of streets and other features.
