Housing Economics – What Can Be Done in the Developing World?

tscglobal.org - by Steve Riley - September 1, 2013

Housing economics are as important in the developing world as they are in the industrialized countries.

The existing housing in most of the world is at best “temporary’ by modern standards.

The occupants of such a shelter, by default, become enslaved to the shelter, constantly engaged in the work of maintaining the shelter and endlessly replacing the deteriorating elements purchased with what little currency they can muster.

Shelter in a Day - Disaster Relief Housing

submitted by Stan Pleskunas

http://www.shelterinaday.com/

Shelter In A Day provides not only safe, secure and sturdy emergency and disaster relief housing, but Shelters are also termite, rust and rot resistant and come equipped with lockable doors and windows.  Shelter In A Day’s homes are eco-friendly as they are crafted from waterproof, recycled wood fiber material.

But perhaps the most valuable quality of Shelter In A Day is that homes can be erected in one day, without tools or electricity, using a new patented “Tool Free Joint.”  Shelter's Tool Free Joint reinvents a simple, yet solidly constructed, carpenter style joint with a secure locking peg that is very easy to assemble.

Shelter In A Day's homes are earthquake and windstorm resistant, built to last and provide those in need a very appealing alternative to traditional "box car" type shelters. Roof overhangs keep the noonday sun off the walls, keeping Shelter's cool inside.  A sturdy and lockable door and windows allow light and ventilation.

businessinsider.com - November 2nd, 2012 - Alex Davies

Outside Chengdu, in central China, a 78 million square foot site has been determined for an unconventional sort of construction project. It will be a city built from scratch, for 80,000 people, none of whom will need a car to get around.

The "Great City" is a plan for an ambitious urban center designed to limit its residents environmental impact by producing clean energy, reducing waste, and promoting public transportation over individual car use.

Stop Talking About the Weather and Do Something: Three Ways to Finance Sustainable Cities

Submitted by Albert Gomez

hbswk.hbs.edu - November 6th, 2012

The wrath of Hurricane Sandy has illuminated a fundamental question: How do we ensure that our cities are resilient in the face of inevitable future disasters? A destroyed city is not a sustainable city. I'm making the case that it's time to stop complaining about climate change.

Many may perceive China as a crowded, polluted country, but that legacy is changing. Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture just unveiled its master plan for Chengdu Tianfu District Great City, a self-sustaining satellite city that offers a solution to the problems of overburdened infrastructure and high pollution levels that assail many of China’s major urban centers.

The project envisions a city that avoids the high energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with suburban sprawl. According to the architects, Great City will be developed by Beijing Vantone Real Estate Co., Ltd. over the next eight years. When completed, it will be home to about 30,000 families totaling 80,000 people.

World Habitat Day: A Day to Recognize the Basic Need for Shelter

huffingtonpost.com - October 1st, 2012 - Jimmy Carter

In the waning hours of a January afternoon, as children played after school and parents prepared to end their work days, Haiti was suddenly shaken forever by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Lives were lost, communities destroyed. An already-challenged country instantly faced even greater odds. Nearly three years later, some progress has been made, but the fact that -- unacceptably -- hundreds of thousands of people still live in tents and makeshift shelters should shake the world community.

Team Romania Sells Their Solar Decathlon Plus-Energy PRISPA Home

submitted by Samuel Bendett

inhabitat.com - by Tafline Laylin - September 18, 2012

Unlike most homes we've visited so far at the 2012 Solar Decathlon in Madrid, Team Romania's enchanting plus-energy PRISPA house already feels like home. The prototype has a comfortable, lived-in look and feel - no wonder it has already been sold! It's a good thing the team opted for simplicity and a modular design, because after the competition ends on 29 September, they will disassemble and reassemble the PRISPA for the third and final time.

Later this month the Madrid Solar Decathlon will welcome the only Japanese entrant, the Omotenashi House designed by students from Chiba University. The house has been designed for two people to lead a self-sufficient lifestyle, incorporating modern technology with inspiration from—and respect for—traditional Japanese architectural practices. Following the earthquake and subsequent Fukushima disaster, Japan has been looking for inspiration to create a low-carbon future.
