These are the Humanitarian Decision Makers

submitted by Albert Gomez

veritythink.com - by Andrej Verity - September 3, 2013

In my June post Who are the Humanitarian Decision Makers, I outlined why I have problems with how easily we use the phrase “for the decision makers” without really knowing who they are. Once you start investigating the problem, you quickly realize how large and diverse the range of decision makers are in humanitarian response.

Now, it is easy to complain but harder to do something. So rather than leaving this problem to fester within the community, a few of us decided to do something.

A poster explaining LogIK

reliefweb.int - July 10th, 2013

When disasters strike, in-kind emergency relief items are sent from around the world. Until now, there has been no way to centrally record international contributions of humanitarian relief items.
To fill this gap, OCHA created LogIK (Logistics In-Kind) — a new online database that records these contributions. It gathers logistics information such as the sender, the origin, the destination and the details of the items.

Lac-Megantic Train Blast: PM Harper Visits 'War Zone'

One witness said the fireball that followed the derailment was "like an atomic bomb"

bbc.co.uk - July 7, 2013

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper says the part of Lac-Megantic affected by Saturday's crude oil explosion looks like a "war zone".

At least five people died when runaway wagons packed with crude oil derailed and blew up early on Saturday.

Some 30 buildings had been completely incinerated by fires which engulfed the historic centre, said Mr Harper.

Police are trying to find 40 missing people: a nearby bar was said to have been crowded at the time of the blast.
