Washington (CNN) -- The hundreds of thousands of typhoon victims in the Philippines need help, and they need it now, the U.S. Marine Corps general in charge of the U.S. military relief effort says. . .

. . . While U.S. Marines are on the ground providing aid and more U.S. military help has been dispatched, Kennedy said more help is urgently needed.

"The rest of the world needs to get mobilized, the rest of the donor community," he told NBC News. "A week from now will be too late. "

The infographic below highlights the fact that 2.5 billion people have to seek out other options in lieu of a loo -- and it's just not OK.

Funny euphemisms aside, the World Bank created this illustration to detail the fact that lack of access to sanitation costs the world $260 billion yearly in health and productivity.

Health costs include $51 million spent on medication, transportation and hospitalization.

Loo turns poo into power

Scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have invented a new toilet system that will turn human waste into electricity and fertilizers and also reduce the amount of water needed for flushing by up to 90 percent compared to current toilet systems in Singapore.

Dubbed the No-Mix Vacuum Toilet, it has two chambers that separate the liquid and solid wastes.  Using vacuum suction technology, such as those used in aircraft lavatories, flushing liquids would now take only 0.2 liters of water while flushing solids require just one liter.

Coke, Ford, Heinz, Nike and P&G team up on plant-based PET resins

Major corporations are teaming up to accelerate the development of PET made entirely from plant-based sources.

Coca-Cola Co., Ford Motor Co., H.J. Heinz Co., Nike Inc. and Procter & Gamble Co. have formed the Plant PET Technology Collaborative, a group aimed at supporting the development and use of plant-based PET material and fibers.

According to a news release, the collaborative will support new technologies and focus on researching and developing commercial solutions for plant-based PET. The collaborative also will work to develop common practices and standards for using plant-based plastics, including life-cycle analyses and universal terminology.

Plastic-Eating Fungi Found in Amazon May Solve Landfill Problems

Just when you thought that plastic waste was never going to break down in the environment, along comes Mother Nature to solve the problem.

The Amazon contains more species of flora and fauna than virtually anywhere else on earth.

In a report by NZ Herald it was stated that a group of students from Yale University found a species which appears to be happy eating plastic in airless landfills.

Their findings were published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology last year with the conclusion that the microbe is "a promising source of biodiversity from which to screen for metabolic properties useful for bioremediation."

MYANMAR: Fighting open defecation one village at a time

YAE OO, 4 May 2012 (IRIN) - The Burmese government declared three villages in western Bago Division open defecation free (ODF), a first in Myanmar, following the first year of a community-led total sanitation (CLTS) effort launched by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Health.

"This is a major step forward. It proves that communities can discard the practice of open defecation and build latrines on their own initiative," Ramesh Shrestha, the UNICEF country representative in Myanmar, told IRIN.

ETI Seeks Energy-from-Waste Demonstrator Plant Partners

The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) is seeking partners for a new £13m project to help design and build a next-generation energy-from-waste demonstrator plant.

The aim of the project, which is part of ETI’s Bio Energy programme, is to commercially demonstrate the ability of how such a plant can create energy from waste and produce energy at efficiencies higher than previously produced.

In a statement, ETI said it is hoped the plant could be designed by 2014 and operational by 2016.

New Initiative Supports National Sanitation Planning

Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) will soon launch a new initiative to help off-track countries meet their WASH goals. The National Planning for Results Initiative (NPRI) aims to pool donor support to develop in-country planning capacity. SWA announced the initiative during their session on National Sanitation Planning at the 6th World Water Forum in Marseilles. The official launch of the NPRI will take place at the upcoming SWA High Level Meeting in April this year.
