The aim of the project, which is part of ETI’s Bio Energy programme, is to commercially demonstrate the ability of how such a plant can create energy from waste and produce energy at efficiencies higher than previously produced.

In a statement, ETI said it is hoped the plant could be designed by 2014 and operational by 2016.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton urged cities and the World Bank to work on curbing methane emissions from landfills and charcoal, saying those steps first would buy time in the fight against global warming.

Politicians may need years to work out a way to limit the carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels, and it would cheaper and quicker to focus on other gases first, Clinton said at the C40 meeting of mayors from the world’s largest cities in Sao Paulo today. Methane has 25 times the global warming impact of carbon dioxide, also known as CO2.

As well as reducing waste, officials hope the chickens will provide at least 200 eggs per year

A French village has proposed giving two chickens to each household in order to cut down on organic waste.

Officials in the village of Pince in north-western France say the chickens should each consume 150kg (330lb) of rubbish per year.

It is hoped that as well as reducing waste, the chickens will help families save money by providing eggs.

Those who express an interest will receive their chickens in September, officials say.
