Here comes El Nino: It's early, likely to be big, sloppy and add even more heat to a warming world After months of gradually warming sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, NOAA officially issued an El Nino advisory Thursday and stated that this one might be different than the others. This El Nino started earlier than usual, which puts 2023 in the running for warmest year on record. Though the Atlantic hurricane season is typically quieter during these events, unusually warm waters in this region could challenge El Nino's dampening influence.

Smoky haze blanketing US and Canada could last into the weekend With weather systems expected to hardly budge, the smoky blanket billowing across the U.S. and Canada from wildfires in Quebec and Nova Scotia should persist into Thursday and possibly the weekend. That means at least another day, or more, of a dystopian-style detour that’s chased players from ballfields, actors from Broadway stages, delayed thousands of flights, and sparked a resurgence in mask wearing and remote work — all while raising concerns about the health effects of prolonged exposure to such bad air. U.S.

Canada wildfires are leading to air-quality alerts in US. Here's how to stay safe Canada is dealing with a series of intense wildfires that have spread from the western provinces to Quebec, with hundreds of forest fires burning. Wind has carried smoke from the fires southward, triggering air quality alerts throughout the United States. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday issued a poor air quality alert for New England, a day after parts of Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota received a similar advisory. Last week, U.S. officials as far south as Maryland, Baltimore, Virginia and Pennsylvania reported being impacted by the wildfires.

UN climate chief calls fossil fuel phase out key to curbing warming but may not be on talks' agenda The United Nations climate chief says phasing out all fossil fuels is central to curbing global warming. But in an interview with The Associated Press he also says the concept might not make it on agenda of “make-or-break” international climate negotiations this fall. United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell says he couldn’t quite promise that the idea of a fossil fuel phase out would get a spot on the agenda in climate talks because that's up to the conference president.
