WASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday said that new Ebola guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were “sensible, based in science” and would help keep Americans safe while not discouraging volunteers from traveling to West Africa to battle the disease at its source....

5,000 Ebola Health Care Workers Needed In West Africa: WHO

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Authorities are having trouble figuring out how many more people are getting Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone and where the hot spots are in those countries, harming efforts to get control of the raging, deadly outbreak, the U.N.'s top Ebola official in West Africa said Tuesday.

"The challenge is good information, because information helps tell us where the disease is, how it's spreading and where we need to target our resources," Anthony Banbury told The Associated Press by phone from the Ghanaian capital of Accra, where the U.N. Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, or UNMEER, is based.

Health experts say the key to stopping Ebola is breaking the chain of transmission by tracing and isolating those who have had contact with Ebola patients or victims. Health care workers can't do that if they don't know where new cases are emerging.

Why Protective Gear Isn’t Stopping Ebola | Co.Design | business + design

Why Protective Gear Isn’t Stopping Ebola

You will probably never contract Ebola. The average patient with Ebola only infects just two other people, even in the least developed parts of Africa, making it far less virulent than HIV, mumps, or measles, which spread to 4, 10, and 18 people respectively. But that fact is of little consolation when you consider that multiple health care providers are still getting sick, having contracted the disease despite wearing protective gear.
The safest gear is virtually unwearable.
It’s easy to blame incompetence at moments like this, but the fact of the matter is, our best protective suits aren’t stopping Ebola. And even if some hypothetical Ebola-proof suit did exist, you’d have a heck of a lot of trouble producing it, distributing it, and wearing it.

Gulf Oil Spill Left Rhode Island-Sized Oily 'Bathtub Ring' On Seafloor, Study Finds

WASHINGTON (AP) — The BP oil spill left an oily "bathub ring" on the sea floor that's about the size of Rhode Island, new research shows.

The study by David Valentine, the chief scientist on the federal damage assessment research ships, estimates that about 10 million gallons of oil coagulated on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico around the damaged Deepwater Horizons oil rig.

Valentine, a geochemistry professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, said the spill from the Macondo well left other splotches containing even more oil. He said it is obvious where the oil is from, even though there were no chemical signature tests because over time the oil has degraded.

Ebola Waste Permits Granted to Five Companies

Veolia and Advanced Environmental Options are among five companies that have received “non-site-specific” special permits for handling Ebola waste, according to Reuters.

The other special permits have been issued to Stericycle, Triumvirate Environmental and Smith Systems Transportation, according to a spokeswoman for the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Under the permits, the five companies are not limited as to where they can pick up Ebola-related waste or dispose of it.

Veolia’s permit is listed on the pipeline and hazardous materials unit website and is good until March 31, 2015.

Dana West of Advanced Environmental Options confirmed that her company has received a nationwide permit for handling Ebola waste, valid until March 31. The permit can be extended for up to two years.
