Decline in COVID reporting muddles tracking of global illness patterns CIDRAP

Global cases and deaths continued to drop over the past 28 days, but the metrics don't accurately reflect infection rates because of the steady drop in testing and regular reporting from countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) said (Thursday) in its latest weekly update.

June temperatures briefly passed key climate threshold. Scientists expect more such spikes Worldwide temperatures briefly exceeded a key warming threshold earlier this month, drawing notice in the scientific community and prompting public chatter that climate change might be accelerating. The mercury has since dipped again, but experts say the brief surge marked a new global heat record for June and indicates more extremes ahead. European researchers said Thursday that the the start of June saw global surface air temperatures rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time.

FDA advisers endorse updating COVID vaccines to target latest omicron strain The COVID-19 vaccines are on track for a big recipe change this fall. Today’s vaccines still contain the original coronavirus strain, the one that started the pandemic. But that strain was long ago supplanted by mutated versions as the virus rapidly evolves. Scientific advisers for the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said the next round of shots should only include protection against the newest omicron variants that are now dominant worldwide.

Mpox transmission stays low globally, with mixed regional patterns CIDRAP

Global mpox transmission continues at low levels, though two regions—Southeast Asia and Africa—reported increases in recent weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its latest update on the outbreak.

Since the last update on May 26, 552 new cases have been reported, reflecting a slight rise of 0.6%. Also, the WHO received reports of four more related deaths.
