Fossil fuels should be 'phased out by 2100' says IPCC

2 November 2014 Last updated at 05:00 ET By Matt McGrath Environment correspondent, BBC News
The IPCC says fossil fuels - without carbon capture - should be "phased out" by 2100
The unrestricted use of fossil fuels must end soon if the world is to avoid dangerous climate change.

10 Reasons Renewable Energy Can Save the Planet

Read page 1

In 2013, commercial solar power reached grid parity (i.e. the point at which it is comparable or cheaper to produce electricity with solar than purchase it from the grid) in Italy, Germany and Spain and will do so soon in Mexico and France.

3. Renewables are now mainstream: In the OECD countries, 80 percent of new electricity generation added between now and 2020 is expected to be renewable.

In the non-OECD countries, conventional power still dominates, but renewables are already the largest new generation source. Given China’s recent action to curb coal use and restrict new coal plants in some regions, the projection on new conventional generation may still change.

4. Individual countries are already reaching high shares of wind, solar and other renewables

Ebola can survive on surfaces for almost TWO MONTHS: Tests reveal certain strains survive for weeks when stored at low temperatures

Research claims certain strains of Ebola can remain on surfaces for 50 days
It survived the longest on glass surfaces stored at 4° (39°F)
Centres for Disease Control and Prevention claims Ebola typically lives on a ‘dry’ surface for hours - including doorknobs and tables
But when stored in moist conditions such in mucus, this is extended
Survival time depends on the surface, and the room temperature
Virus can be killed using household bleach and people must come into direct contact with the sample to risk infection

The number of confirmed Ebola cases passed the 10,000 mark over the weekend, despite efforts to curb its spread.

Keep On Drillin'? Santa Barbara Prepares To Vote On Oil Future

A cow walks near oil pump jacks in Santa Maria, Calif. Oil production has long been a part of Santa Barbara County, but a new ballot measure could effectively shut down all new drilling operations there.

Jae C. Hong/AP
Think of California's Santa Barbara County and you might picture the area's famous beaches or resorts and wineries. But in the northern reaches of the vast county, oil production has been a major contributor to the economy for almost a century.

So it's no surprise that the oil industry there is feverishly organizing to fight a local ballot initiative — Measure P — that would ban controversial drilling methods such as hydraulic fracturing. What is turning heads, however, is the sheer volume of money flooding into this local race, mainly from large oil companies.
