UNICEF: 12.7 million children in Africa missed vaccinations A new report from UNICEF says nearly 13 million children missed one or more vaccinations in Africa between 2019 and 2021 because of the disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation has left the continent vulnerable to even more outbreaks of disease and facing a “child survival crisis." The report released Thursday confirms there was a global “backslide” in childhood immunization over those three years. That's the worst regression for childhood vaccinations in 30 years. Africa has the highest number of unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children.

WHO elevates XBB.1.16 to variant of interest as levels rise in US and other countries CIDRAP

The World Health Organization (WHO) this week boosted the XBB.1.16 Omicron subvariant to a variant of interest (VOI) from a variant under monitoring (VUM), based on the latest assessments from its technical advisory group on virus evolution.

The subvariant is fueling India's biggest surge in about 7 months, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported another jump in the proportion of XBB.1.16 viruses.

The United Nations' climate agency in a Friday report says killer floods, droughts and heat waves hit around the world, costing many billions of dollars. Global ocean heat and acidity levels hit record highs and Antarctic sea ice and European Alps glaciers reached record low amounts. Last year was the fifth or sixth hottest depending on measuring techniques.
