Survival skills are techniques a person may use in a dangerous situation (e.g. natural disasters) to save themselves or others (see also bushcraft). Generally speaking, these techniques are meant to provide the basic necessities for human life: water, food, shelter, habitat, and the need to think straight, to signal for help, to navigate safely, to avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and plants, and for first aid. In addition, survival skills are often basic ideas and abilities that ancient humans had to use for thousands of years, so these skills are partially a reenactment of history.

Research into water is growing faster than the average 4 percent annual growth rate for all research disciplines, claims a new report presented by Elsevier and Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) during the 2012 World Water Week in Stockholm. The report, The Water and Food Nexus: Trends and Development of the Research Landscape, analyzes the major trends in water and food-related article output at international, national, and institutional levels. An Elsevier release reports that Elsevier and SIWI worked closely together on creating the report, which is based on the analysis of Scopus citation data by Elsevier’s SciVal Analytics team.

Daiwa House, Japan's largest homebuilder, has introduced a line of prefabricated hydroponic vegetable factories, aimed at housing complexes, hotels, and top-end restaurants. Called the Agri-Cube, these units are touted by Daiwa as the first step in the industrialization of agriculture, to be located in and amongst the places where people live, work, and play.

More and more people desire sustainable, organic produce for their own use, and are turning to urban farming in an effort to insure the highest degree of freshness.

More Dengue Fever Reported in Eastern Cuba

A vocational school has been turned into a makeshift hospital to handle the overflow of Dengue patients.

An outbreak of dengue fever in eastern Cuba has reportedly forced authorities to turn a vocational school into a hospital, while a city racked by a cholera epidemic now also faces an increase in the mosquito that carries dengue.

Medical personnel in the eastern city of Camaguey said the Maximo Gómez vocational school for sciences is being used as a hospital, and a local university building will be turned into a treatment center if the outbreak spreads.

“We have a huge outbreak of dengue here, and if things continue to be bad — we already are at the level of epidemic — I think they may quarantine us,” one local medical worker told relatives in Miami. “Don’t worry too much, but this is bad.”

An uninhabited Pacific island has come top of the first comprehensive ocean health index, which compares all the world's coastal countries and scores them for how well the seas around them benefit both man and nature.

Tiny 4.5 sq km Jarvis island, halfway between Hawaii and the Cook Islands, was briefly mined for seabird fertiliser in the 19th century but both the waters around it and the island itself have been left more or less untouched since then, which accounts for its top score of 86 out of 100 compared with a global average of 60.

Poland Bans GE Corn, Monsanto Buys Bee Research Firm

Active protests in Poland have led to a ban on Monsanto’s Mon810 corn. Monsanto’s corn has been genetically engineered to produce a mutant version of the insecticide Bt. Beekeepers saw the link between the corn and the deaths of honeybees.

So what did Monsanto do? It bought a leading bee collapse research organization, Beeologics, to study the collapse disorder that is thought to be a result—at least in part– of Monsanto’s own creation.
