> FG To Conduct Survey In IDP Camps

> The chairman of the National Population Commission, Eze Duruiheoma, has said the commission would be conducting a migration and health survey at 72 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across 15 states in Nigeria. He stated this at the United Nations launch of the State of the World Population (SWOP) report on Thursday, December 17, in Abuja.

> Duruiheoma said the report would be useful in planning for both the state and local government while pledging the support of developing partners in mitigating the plight of the IDPs especially women and girls in crisis prone areas.

> He said: “The commission plans to conduct a migration and health survey of internally displaced persons in the first quarter of 2016. The survey, covering 72 IDP camps in 15 states of the federation will collect data on the living condition of the internally displaced persons in Nigeria including their reproductive health status and and the facilities available.

> Stating the current number of IDPs in the country as 1, 491, 607, Duruiheoma said women and girls bear more of the consequences resulting from conflicts and violence.

> He described the current situation as disheartening adding that the survey was part of the commission’s duty as “as the constitutional body charged with providing demographic data for planning purposes, to generate, analyse and disseminate accurate, relevant and up to date information on the plight of the population in crisis areas for evidence based planning and interventions” .

> Speaking at the event, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bello Mohammed who was represented by Rilwanu Mohammed said there are over 15, 000 IDPs in seven camps within Abuja.

> The National Population Commission was established in 1998 to undertake demographic sample surveys, compile, collate, publish migration and civil registration statistics and also monitor population policy of Nigeria.
