>> Dear Group,
>>
>> Nielsen installed an app on the smartphones of 5,000 volunteers to track their app usage and found that Americans use about 26 apps each for nearly 40 hours per month. Moreover, 70% of usage was from the top 200 apps on the market. While the top-ranked categories didn’t include ‘health’ or ‘fitness’, that’s not necessarily an indicator of lack of utilization since digital health apps aren’t always about dwelling on an app.
>>
>> Augmented and virtual reality wearable devices got more attention than usual this week as a result of Facebook-owned Oculus revealing the consumer version of its Rift headset. AR and VR represent huge value for health and medicine. For instance, Microsoft’s HoloLens is being used by researchers at Case Western University to transform medical education and healthcare. There are also many consumer health and fitness applications which will continue to grow in number.
>>
>> In response to the MERS outbreak, the South Korean government is monitoring the smartphones of up to 3,400 people now under quarantine in the country. MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) is a deadly virus that can cause severe pneumonia and organ failure. Gene sequencing was also used by researchers to learn that no changes appeared in the virus to make itself more transmissible.
>>
>> Stanford’s School of Medicine reports that their “MyHeart Counts” study now has 40,000 iPhone-user participants thanks to being part of Apple’s ResearchKit platform. The app collects physical activity using the phone’s sensors plus participants answer questions about cardiac-risk factors. They also receive coaching tips and feedback on their chances of developing heart disease. The plan is to add behavior-modification methods to encourage healthy behaviors via personalized feedback that takes into account their individual behaviors and risk. Note: Wouldn’t it be great if they also utilized genetic information on each individual’s cardiovascular disease risks?
>>
>> It’s no secret that healthcare providers find the usability of EHRs very unsatisfactory. To further understand the significance of this for patient safety, researchers from Georgetown University School of Medicine analyzed EHR vendors and their user-centered design processes. The National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) includes “Safety Enhanced Design” in the EHR certification criteria stipulations, which include usability process requirements. Here’s their searchable list of certified EHR & EMR solution products & vendors, which I also have linked to on my global, crowdsourced list of nearly-700 digital health solutions. http://storyofdigitalhealth.com/solutions
