> “The Data Revolution is giving the world powerful tools that help usher in a more sustainable future."
> - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
>
>
> Dear colleagues, friends and supporters,
>
> 2015 was a significant year for the global community, with the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, and a historic international agreement on climate change. It was also a year which saw growing momentum around the importance of a data revolution, and the embrace of finding ways to integrate big data and data science into development and humanitarian practice by governments, the UN system, and civil society.
>
> Together with a growing community of partners, the Global Pulse initiative is committed to continuing to serve as an innovation driver and ecosystem catalyst to accelerate the responsible use of big data for the Sustainable Development Goals, humanitarian action and climate action in 2016.
>

> Big Data for Development in Action: 20 Case Studies
>
> In July 2015, Global Pulse published a collection of 20 case studies of big data innovation projects covering global issues ranging from public health to climate change, food security to employment. Each case study demonstrates how new sources of aggregated digital data derived from mobile phone usage, social media, or online search could support sustainable development and inform targeting of humanitarian response efforts.
> Data Revolution at the UN General Assembly
>
> Global Pulse worked with several partners to ensure that the Data Revolution was top of mind during the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in September upon the adoption of the new SDGs. Key events included an event on “A Big Data Revolution for Humanitarian Response”, the launch of the new Global Partnership on Sustainable Development Data, and opportunities for hands-on interaction at the “Data Playground,” co-hosted with the UN Millennium Campaign and Microsoft.
