> East Hampton Town has spent the past few months looking at the unique issues affecting the commercial areas in East Hampton, Springs, Wainscott and Amagansett, and this week they’re kicking off a series of visits and community meetings to discuss the future of the hamlet of Montauk.

> These hamlet studies are underway by the town in an attempt “to create plans for the future that create dynamic, walkable hamlet centers while preserving open space and enhancing the character of each hamlet,” according to the town announcement of the studies <http://www.eastendbeacon.com/2016/03/08/east-hampton-to-begin-hamlet-study-community-meetings/> back in March.

> The planning firms of Dodson & Flinker and RKG Associates and Fine Arts and Sciences have been contracted by the town to conduct the studies.
>
> The intensive, multi-day planning and design exercise is designed to seek public input to better understand how homes, businesses, recreation, and community work today, and how they can function better in the future.

> This week’s public meetings kick off with a Downtown Montauk Public Site Tour on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10:30 a.m. Attendees will meet at the gazebo on the green for a walking tour and group discussion with Dodson & Flinker.
>
> That same afternoon, Sept. 14,, the group will tour the Montauk Harbor area at 2:30 p.m., beginning at the public parking lot on the water next to Gosman’s.
>
> On Wednesday evening, Sept. 14, the consultants will host a Montauk Hamlet-Wide Public Workshop at 6:30 p.m. at the Montauk Playhouse gymnasium at 240 Edgemere Street. Attendees will have a chance to meet with consultants to share ideas and opinions about what’s working well, what needs to be fixed, and how best to plan for the future of Montauk’s commercial centers.

> On Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the consultants will host a Downtown Montauk Public Visioning Workshop and on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. they will host a Montauk Harbor Public Visioning Workshop. At each workshop, attendees will work with their friends, neighbors, and the consulting team to explore traffic, parking, sidewalks, open space, and the future of development in each area of Montauk. Both meetings will be held in the Montauk Playhouse gym.

> The week’s events will be capped with a discussion titled “The Future of Montauk” on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m., also at the Montauk Playhouse gym. The morning will include an overview of planning and design ideas from the previous three days’ workshops, and a public forum on the best approaches for Montauk’s future.
